Ever feel like you’re on the hamster wheel getting lots of information or advice but having difficulty integrating it in your life? I’ve been thinking a lot about this because clients have been asking me why is it taking them so long to “get the message”.
It’s an interesting question and one that I grapple with in recent months quite often. I often hear a piece of music and it sparks questions and leaves a lingering message. As I continue listening to the song over and over I hope that I really “get” the message but it’s not always that simple. Recently I’ve been listening to two songs from the musical “The Color Purple”. Each song has struck a chord in my soul and I know that there is a treasure in the words but it hasn’t sunk in quite yet. In the past I would just move on and say that I’ll get the message in some other arena, but now I’m committed to hearing it from these two songs so I listen to them 10-15 times a day, every day and I’ll do it till I “get it”.
It’s important when facing a life-altering diagnosis to stay with the feelings long enough to unlock their mystery. You may think the messages you hear are straight forward and easy to understand, but if you find yourself fleeing the scene to move onto greener pastures then you’re missing out of the gifts your feelings are giving you. It’s important to go a little deeper than you have in the past because it’s the only way to strike it rich.
What’s recurring in your life? What messages keep popping up and making their presence known while you continue to push them to the back burner? What’s in the background that you can bring to the foreground? It has nothing to do with how quickly you get the message. Signs and symbols repeat in your consciousness because deep in your soul you know the message is crucial to your growth, your healing and potentially your cure. Don’t ignore the whispers!
