It has been quite a while since I’ve written about health, illness, and death. Trust me, it’s not because those things haven’t been part of my world, but I’ve been pondering these experiences through a different lens.
First, we have experienced the pandemic. Our world is forever changed knowing, learning, and exposing our deep vulnerability. We’ve heard about, watched coverage of, and experienced things we never could have imagined would happen in our lifetime.
For years I’ve looked at health, illness, and death through the lens as a psychotherapist and as an artist. During the pandemic I made a bold decision to enter seminary. I was continuously being plagued by questions I couldn’t answer, and my curiosity was heightened about how the world religions tackled life’s deepest and hardest questions.
I’ve become an ordained interfaith minister, and moving through the world wearing different hats, I ask different questions. Perhaps they’re not different, but more expansive and inclusive of a more holistic worldview. I also feel grappling with the existential angst we all face, I can or at least try to sort out what it all means to me and in turn, those in my sphere of influence.
I hope you’ll join me on this pilgrimage. I believe there will be some interesting and terrifying questions to wrestle. I believe it’s in the wrestling where I’ll have the most success of practicing discernment. See you on the journey!
