What We’re Dealt

(*Disclaimer:  During the pandemic I went to seminary and was ordained as an Interfaith Minister.  Some posts will reference biblical/historical figures.  Not proselytizing, just punctuating a point.)

Do you like lemonade?  There are so many ways to make it, not to mention the colors it can be.  I love lemonade, but not always a fan of the quote, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!”.  It seems a bit too simplistic, and overly dismissive of the trials and tribulations many face, especially when facing a chronic or life-threatening illness.

What if we could shift the narrative?  What if it’s not about what we’re dealt, but just the progression of life taking hold and asking us, “What will you do with this?”  I think a lot about this as a person who has been dealing with auto-immune diseases since childhood (I’m 62).  In addition, I am sitting and waiting to see what may arise when it’s time for my next bloodwork in the fall.

I do have choices!  I can sit around and practice the ending, or I can live my life with intention, and base decisions on information, not a wing and a prayer.  I have a spiritual director/companion.  I asked her for a good text about Job.  I figured if Job could face as much trauma as he did and still have faith, who am I to try and blaze a new trail?

My most current session was last Friday and during the session the Rabbi said, “I’m not sure Job is the story you should be reading.  I think you may be better served by the story of Jacob.”  The idea of wrestling with the Divine is an interesting idea.  One I will explore in the coming months.

We can’t forecast or predict the future.  We can’t “blame” our genetic history because it’s not something we could have altered.  How will we live?  Will we live with anger and resentment?  Will we live with gusto and purpose?  This is what we have control over and let that be the guiding star toward wellness.
