Behind Closed Doors

A lot happens behind closed doors.  For many of us, a diagnosis comes behind the door of the doctor’s office.  It’s in this inner sanctum of the doctor’s office where one’s life changes forever.  We often see closed doors and wonder what’s behind it, and then we have our own moment of the door unlocking, opening, and letting us in and then we may have second thoughts about wanting to know.

So, what do we do once we pass through the velvet ropes.  We join a club we never intended on belonging to, while simultaneously facing the shock of a reality we couldn’t imagine.  Passing through those doors we meet people we never would have known before the diagnosis.  We sit in waiting rooms wondering are those around us doing better than us or worse.  It’s a time of mind games causing many of us to feel like we’re on a hamster wheel, getting nowhere.

If you’ll humor me, let’s change the story.  There is a Buddhist saying, “Don’t practice the ending.”  Let’s think about what exists beyond the door is a mystery.  A mystery we’ll explore on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

I wonder if what lives beyond the closed door is about unlocking what’s possible.  How do we explore compassion for ourselves and others?  It’s about acknowledging the inner strength that may have been hiding behind the locked door of our souls.  Walk through the door and if you’re willing, invite others to cross the threshold with you.

I’m always willing to accompany those on this journey.  It’s frustrating and sad at times, and at other times it’s liberating.
