Thresholds

When we think of thresholds we often think of doorways.  We go from one room to the next.  We enter someone’s home.  But a threshold is any place where we cross from one place to another.  We may become someone new.  We are thrust to a new component of our identity.

Developmentally, we move from one phase to the next in our lives.  We develop new skills and simultaneously, we’re exposed to new challenges.  It would be great if there were archways or other physical structures when we move through stages of our lives.  The reality is they sneak up on us and till we’re challenged; we don’t know we’re passing through a threshold.

This can’t be truer than when we’re given a diagnosis.  It’s nothing we prep for.  It’s nothing we’re innately equipped to accept or handle.  It means we’re asked to develop a new set of coping skills.  If you’re a person of faith the questions we ask may need to change.  James Finley says, “G-d protects us from nothing, but sustains us through everything.”

Moving beyond the threshold we’ll meet new people, read different material, and may experience our bodies differently.  We may choose to shift our interactions from superficial to more meaningful conversations.  We may be challenged to accept help, no matter how independent we’ve been up to this point.

Passing through thresholds may include passing through other realms.  It doesn’t matter what transpires, you will be changed.
