Looking For Answers

Do you wonder why the question “why” is one of the most asked?  We’re always looking for cause and effect relationships.  When we receive a health challenge diagnosis, many begin scrutinizing every decision they’ve made that could have caused the diagnosis.  Does it help?

My thirty plus year experience facilitating support groups for those facing a health challenge has taught me rehashing one’s past waiting for the cause of the illness is wasted energy.  If you’ve received a diagnosis the focus needs to be forward, not backwards.  If energy is finite, why waste it on something we can’t change.  We can put it toward making the outcome as good as possible.

The other reason many ask “why” is to attribute blame.  Self-flagellation is harmful to one’s emotional and spiritual health.  It will compromise the body, mind, and spirit’s ability to heal.  The question we should be asking ourselves is “what can I do differently going forward” and “How can I take the best care of myself possible?

What if answers included a sense of self-forgiveness?  What if answers included action if your diagnosis was caused by environmental factors?  What if answers provided information to family members so they can make decisions for themselves is the diagnosis is genetic.

“Why” has a place, just not in affixing blame, but in using information for health and healing.
