Let It All Hang Out!

I wonder if people know how wise they really are.  I attend lectures, or have conversations with friends over coffee and out of the blue this profound statement becomes the center of my attention.  I an struck with the impact a simple statement can have, especially when it’s something said in jest.

Last night I attended a monthly artist talk sponsored by one of the local jazz clubs.  Each month the host interviews an artist about their personal ambitions, their motivation for creating art, their inspiration, etc.  Before the interview Hector Munoz the guest host gave a performance.  Hector is a poet and performance artist in the Denver area.   I’ve heard him perform at previous events, but experiencing his passion in this intimate setting was great.  At the end of his performance which included some expletive language and some screaming he said “I screamed, now I can have a fabulous day tomorrow.”

When I heard that statement it stopped me in my tracks.  The ability to empty his heart, body, mind and soul of those things that perpetuate pain is his personal method of self-liberation.  This type of expression goes way beyond letting the steam out of the pressure cooking trying to avoid an explosion.  This type of self-expression is about purification.  It’s Hector’s way of create a fresh palette so his new day won’t be scarred with any lingering points of disappointment fromt he world or self-degradation.

There is a deep wisdom in Hector’s statement.  I believe that when we have the opportunity to express ourselves creatively we have the opportunity to wipe the slate clean like shaking an Etch-A-Sketch.  We make room for what opportunities come our way or we reserve resources for the challenges needed to face the next step on the journey back to health. 

When we utilize art like a cleansing breath during natural child birth we release those thoughts and feelings that keep us chained to beliefs that don’t move us forward.  Having the capacity to dig deep and create something that is uninhibited, uncensored and without restriction of content is the ultimate in soul expansion.
