As the World Turns

Do you remember the movie Superman?  Superman is told that he can’t change the course of time and events and then we see Superman make the world go in reverse.  This worldly reversal is supposed to set back time…if it were only that easy.  There are times after receiving a diagnosis of a chronic or life-threatening illness that you try with all your might to make the world spin the other way.  How’s that working for you?

Are you spending too much energy engaged in practices that are fruitless?  Are you looking for ways to turn back the sands of time?  We all know that Western culture tries to do this every day.  Look at the advertising in magazines and on television that try to reverse the marks time leaves on our faces and our hands.  Searching for the fountain of youth is a multi-billion dollar business.  If we’re willing to go to those lengths to turn back the hands of time on our physical exterior; what would you do to challenge a health challenge?

The real question is, “Are you using your resources wisely?”  Finding ways to combat the health challenge leaves you prey to many who may be trying to sell you snake oil in your time of need and vulnerability.  When facing a health challenge I hope you have someone you can rely on to bounce ideas off of when making the biggest decisions of your life.  It would be great to make the world spin the other way, but we don’t have the capability, so what’s the alternative?

The alternative is to go forward with all you physical, emotional, and spiritual resources that will propel you on your journey to health and healing.  We can’t go back to the point in time just prior to the diagnosis, but it is possible to take steps to stop the progression of disease or even reach a point of healing (remember there is a difference between curing and healing).

What steps will you take to keep the world moving in the right direction?  How will you fight the instinct to want to make the world spin in reverse and accept the reality of the “new normal”?
